Tokonamé: 1000 years of Japanese quality
Tokonamé is the oldest and most important of the six ancient pottery centers of Japan. In the archipelago, the city is synonymous with cha-ki – or tea utensils – and its production is the result of a long tradition of craftsmanship. Even today and despite increasing mechanization, teapots that combine several parts are assembled by hand.
Manual
Before first use, remove the protective cap from the spout if there is one. Scald the teapot and it will be ready to use.
Traditionally, an earthenware teapot is not washed with dishwashing liquid.
After use, discard the tea leaves and wash the teapot with water. Remove the lid when you let it dry.
If tea leaves clog the filter, use a soft bristle brush to remove them. Cleaning the ceramic filter with a hard object such as a toothpick may crack it.
If the tea tannin stains bother you, gently brush the affected area with baking soda mixed with water.
The surface of a Tokonamé teapot becomes shiny over time.
